Winsor McCay was the most influential early pioneer of animation, and can be called the father of modern animation. Beginning with Little Nemo in 1911, McCay produced what was the first sequence of animation that was actually a cartoon with known characters. In Little Nemo and Gertie the Dinosaur (1914) he used drawings on rice paper for each frame of the cartoon. Starting with this film, The Sinking of the Lusitania (1918) he began the use of celluloids (or "cels") to replace the rice paper. Each frame from this film was painted on frosted nitrate cels.
